It was late in the afternoon when Twilight and Stardust had finished eating lunch, and Twilight decided it was time to test Stardust on her abilities with magic. Twilight walked Stardust to a secluded part of town and looked at the young filly. "Alright, I want to see what you can do," Twilight explained with a smile. " Let's start simple. Do you see that rock over there? Try to levitate it," she ordered, pointing towards a rock that was roughly the size of a small cat.

Stardust looked at the rock for a second, and swallowed. Up until now, she had only had to use magic to pick locks, not to actually levitate something. She closed her eyes, trying to call upon her inner magic, as her horn started glow and power surged from her horn. When she opened her eyes the rock was gone, and in its place was a small crater with burn marks around the edges. She frowned and looked at her hooves. I'm a failure, she said to herself.

Twilight was looking at the crater in the ground. She smiled at her apprentice. "No no, you did just fine. I know exactly what we need to work on with you," she said with a happy tone in her voice.

Stardust looked at Twilight with tears in her eyes, and she sniffed, "Y...you do?" she asked.

Twilight nodded. "Believe it or not, I had problems controlling my magic too, but princess Celestia helped me control it." Twilight explained, remembering the event as if it happened yesterday. "With some practice, and a bit of studying, you'll be able to control your magic as well,"  Twilight told Stardust with a smile.

"Thanks, Twilight," Stardust said with a smile. As they turned to go back to the library, Pinkie Pie bounced up to them and handed Twilight an invitation to a party.

"I'ts for Angel bunny, it's his birthday you're both invited! Fluttershy said she didn't want to burden the town with a party, but I insisted on it!" She went off on one of her little Pinkie Pie rants as Twilight just stood there, nodding to everything she said. Stardust wondered how her mentor could put up with the Pink pony and her yabbering. Pinkie Pie stopped and looked at Stardust for a second, and then back to Twilight. "What are you two doing out here anyway?" she asked with a smile.

Twilight chuckled. "I'm just testing Stardust to see how skilled she is with magic. As you can see by that crater in the ground, she has power but no control," Twilight explained as she pointed to where the rock was just a few moments ago.

Pinkie Pie frowned. "What crater? all I see is a rock!" she exclaimed as she inspected the crater.

Twilight sighed. Pinkie could be random at times, so the fact that she tseemed to think there was a rock there wasn't that surprising to Twilight. "Pinkie, don't you have invitations to deliver?" she tried to remind the pink earth pony.

"Oh right! silly me, I forgot to give Applejack an invitation!" she shouted, as she dashed off.

"What was all that about?" Stardust asked, as Twilight turned to leave.

"That was just Pinkie Pie being Pinkie Pie. You'll get used to it," Twilight said as she started walking back towards the library.

Stardust nodded, and followed her new teacher back to the library. When they left, the crater in the ground vanished, leaving only a rock.

The next day Twilight walked Stardust to school, to meet Cheerilee and the other students. Twilight's reason for making Stardust go to school, was that it would allow her to make friends and meet new ponies. That and Twilight also wanted some time to herself.

"Hello there Stardust, I'm Cheerilee!" the pinkish-purple earth pony said with a smile when Stardust walked into the classroom. "Class, this is Stardust. She's new to Ponyville and she's going to be learning with us from now on. I hope you'll all make her feel welcome," she explained to the class. "Why don't you take a seat next to Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, Stardust?" Cheerilee said, pointing to the two younger ponies in the front row, as she continued the lesson.

Stardust was paying attention to the whole lesson, taking notes vigorously so much so that her pencil seemed like it was on fire. After she was finished taking notes she noticed the class had been looking at her with looks of confusion as if they had never seen a pony take notes before. It wasn't because of the fact that she took notes, not at all. It was the fact she had filled an entire note book with notes copying down every word Cheerilee had said that amazed them.

"Nerd!" a pony sitting in the back row said in a sly voice, making everypony except Cheerilee, Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweet Belle laugh.

Before Cheerilee could say anything the bell rung and the students all ran outside, including Stardust, who didn't know what the bell meant. She just followed the crowd.

Stardust sat under a tree after school, practicing the levitation spell that Twilight had taught her the night before. As she did so, she took notes on what happened each time she failed. When she was about to start up again two fillies, one of which Stardust recognized as the one that called her a nerd in class, walked up to her. They were obviously up to no good.

"Look Silver Spoon, the nerd is still trying to learn even after school,"one of the ponies mocked as she kicked away Stardust's journal.

Stardust tried to get the journal back, but was shoved to the ground by Silver Spoon. "Listen here, Nerd, there are rules in our school that you have to obey," the pony sneered. "It's little nerds and blank flanks like you that make us look bad in class," Silver Spoon continued as she looked into Stardust's fear-filled eyes.

just as Silver Spoon was about to continue with her little speech, Scootaloo rammed into the her with great force, knocking her to the ground. "Leave her alone you bullies, she hasn't done anything wrong, and you know so," the orange Pegasus said, sticking her tongue out at the two snooty ponies.

"Come on Silver Spoon, we don't have time for these blank flanks," Diamond Tiara ordered. As she turned to leave, Silver Spoon followed behind.

Scootaloo gave Stardust her note book back with a smile. "Here you go, Stardust."

Stardust sniffed and looked up. "Why are you being so nice to me?" she asked.

Scootaoo just shrugged. "I don't like not helping a pony in need. That and it gave me an excuse to show Silver Spoon who's boss," she chuckled.

Stardust smiled at her, took her note book and put it in her saddlebag.

Scotaloo looked at her flank for a second, and gasped. "You don't have a Cutie Mark?" she exclaimed with a smile.

Stardust flinched and looked at Scootaloo. "Uhm, no? Is that a problem?" she asked the orange filly.

Scotaloo showed her flank to the young unicorn. "I don't have one either, and neither do Applebloom or Sweetie Belle!" She was smiling. "Stardust, how would you like to become a Cutie Mark Crusader?" She bounced at the last word.

Stardust was about to answer, when two other ponies walked up to Scootaloo. One of them Stardust recognized as Sweetie Belle. "What's all the fuss about, Scoots?" Sweetie Belle asked.

Scootaloo looked at them. "Stardust is going to become part of the C.M.C!" she explained.

The yellow filly next to Sweetie Bell smiled "Really? that's great!"

Scootaloo was jumping with joy. "We have a new member!"she shouted.

Stardust finally spoke up. "I'd love to join, but..." she trailed off.

Applebloom looked at Stardust. "but what?" she asked.

Stardust just looked down at her hooves. "I'd have to ask Twilight if I can," she whispered.

Scootaloo frowned. "oh yeah, I forgot you live with Twilight. Do you think she would let her join?"

Sweetie Belle shook her head. "She'd probably say its too dangerous and a waste of time."

As they continued to talk, Twilight Sparkle walked up behind Sweetie Belle. Stardust looked up to her teacher. "Twi..Twilight," she stammered.

Scootaloo chuckled. "Well duh, thats who we're talking about," she said. Stardust shook her head and pointed her hoof at Twilight.

The crusaders turned around to see the mare standing behind them. She had a big smile on her muzzle. "You were talking about me?" she asked.

Applebloom nodded vigorously. "We were just asking Stardust if she'd like to join the Cutie Mark Crusaders, but she said she'd have to ask you!" she explained.

Twilight looked at Stardust who was looking down at her hooves. Twilight smiled. "Of course she can join."

Stardust looked up and her mouth was open in shock.

Scootaloo looked at Twilight with the same look in her eyes "R..really?" she asked.

Twilight smiled. "Of course, why would I say no?"

Stardust looked at her mentor, shock still present on her face. "But aren't you going to say it's too dangerous?" She asked, not that she was complaining or anything.

Twilight chuckled. "I know it's dangerous, but the Cutie Mark Crusaders are capable of handling themselves in almost any situation, and there's also another reason, my faithful student." Twilight smirked at that last part. She understood why Celestia enjoyed saying that so much. "Remember what I told you this morning?"

Stardust thought for a second, and then remembered Twilight telling her the reason she was going to school wasn't really to learn, but to make friends. "You wanted me to make friends," she realized and Twilight's smile got bigger.

"Without friendship you can't move forward in life. I've learned this lesson, and now I want you to do the same, So every week you're going to write me and Celestia friendship reports, telling us about your journies with the Crusaders, and the lessons you've learned. Understood?" she said.

Stardust smiled and nodded vigourously. Twilight chuckled.

"I've got to head over to Aweet Apple Acres to drop off something. You girls stay out of trouble, and Stardust be back home in time for dinner. Spike's cooking something special." Twilight said as she turned to leave.

Scootaloo smiled. "Well now, let's go get her a cape!" she said, getting her scooter.

Sweetie Belle looked at Stardust. "Come on, I think I have an extra at the club house." She patted the seat in the wagon next to her and Applebloom.

Applebloom looked at her. "I can't wait to show you around the Orchard!" she exclaimed.

Stardust smiled and jumped into the wagon. "OK, let's go!" she said with a smile.

Scootaloo grinned and burst forward full speed, and the three Cutie Mark Crusaders yelled into the air: "CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS NOW AND FOREVER!" as the scooter and wagon headed for the tree house.
